The Club was formed in 1981 and over the years has expanded to the point where we now have a membership of 53. Over the years we have held our meetings at several venues. In 2009 we moved to The Grovefield House Hotel, which has proved to be the perfect venue, having beautiful surroundings, fine dining and ideal facilities for our talks.
The Club’s inaugural meeting was held at the Spade Oak Hotel, Bourne End on Wednesday 9th December 1981. 24 prospective members and 5 local Rotarians were present. The meeting was conducted by a Rotarian who called on members to form a steering committee, initially for 3 months. This first committee comprised of a Chairman (D. Atkinson), a Treasurer (A. Lister) and three others (W. Seabrook, E. Day and E. Pierce).
Rules, based on the Maidenhead Probus Club and Marlow Club, were drafted and a bank account was opened. The draft rules were agreed in principle by 14th December 1981 then amended on 11th January 1982 and finally adopted on 20th January 1982 at a luncheon meeting of 22 members, guests, and Rotarians. It was at this meeting that the first lapel badges and ties were ordered. The Club was sponsored by Bourne End Rotary Club and a gavel was presented to the Club on 21st April 1982. During 1982 the first speaker was George Duridge on Egyptian history, there were visits to Bisham Abbey and Eaton College and the first Ladies Luncheon was held. At the end of 1982 the Club had a bank balance of £24.43.
Meetings were held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at the Spade Oak Hotel until the Club transferred to the Pegasus Hotel, Marlow Bottom on January 16th1985. The initial membership increased from 35 to 50 with about 75% attendance. In 2007 the Club moved to Flackwell Heath Golf Club and by 2010 it had moved to its present home - The Grovefield House Hotel, Burnham.
